Why we use high-fire stoneware.
Most commercial dinnerware is fired in the range of 1100–1200°C. We fire ours at 1280°C, which is why a plate from Rising Peak feels heavier in the hand and rings a clear, bell-like note when you tap it.
Beyond the sound, the higher temperature vitrifies the clay more completely. The body is denser, the surface is less porous, and chips — when they happen, because they always do — tend to be smaller and less likely to spread.
The trade-off is cost: we lose more pieces in the kiln, and the cycle is longer. We think it’s worth it for a plate you can use every day for the next decade.
